1. What are your thoughts on the Jewelry, Footwear & Fashion Accessories pathway. Has it challenged your preconceptions of these disciplines?

Because I really enjoy fashion in general it was honestly a very interesting pathway to explore. Due to my interests lying in styling, although I've played around with fashion accessories, jewelry and footwear I never deeply inquired about the thought that goes into making them. I found it interesting that even for something that is used as a way to decorate the body, it carries so many functions and purposes, such as being a symbol for one's identity or having the purpose to manipulate space and the body itself. Due to the variety of concepts jewelries and fashion accessories can arise from, it helped me realize that honestly a lot of thought goes into creating such crafts. This was a significant realization for me as when it came to accessories I never viewed them to have much importance, however now it widened opportunities for me to make pieces that is cohesive and has more depth rather then just being something that accompanies garments and etc.

2. Are you a maker?

To be honest when I was first assigned this project, I had absolutely no faith in my ability to translate 2D ideas into a final 3D form. However, I do think that I was able to somewhat actualize my sketches into a 3D form that represented my intentions. It was very stressful but somewhat enjoyable to problem solve, and come up with ways of holding up my structure. As an example for my project I created a fashion accessory that partially encapsulated the head, however I was having trouble combining the different cardboard pieces as they would not be well supported with the use of my masking tape. To combat this I instead made use of thread to almost 'stitch' the separate carboard pieces, which ended up giving me a pretty solid structure. I guess I'm somewhat of a maker, as I can visualize how pieces would look in the complete 3D form and can solve problems quickly. However, at the same time I do feel like I'm not skilled enough to really manipulate the materials in order to give of the same vibe as my original sketch.

3. Do materials excite you?

I guess I do find materials exciting. I find it really interesting that each materials has it's own 'character' in a sense where it sensually is unique and evokes certain feelings. What I think makes this more interesting is that materials can represent/feel different depending on the person. Although it's very difficult to manipulate materials to the fullest, I find it exciting that even 'mundane' materials such as cardboard can be torn, twisted, linked, etc. to create something new.

4. Did you enjoy working on the body?

Although I didn't enjoy working on my own body as I had to look into the mirror and see myself, using the models was really enjoyable. It was very fun to adjust my piece in order to fit the body, and when it somewhat worked out in the end I was very delighted as I never thought I would make anything that would even remotely complement the human figure. I also really enjoyed manipulation the cardboard onto the body because it engaged me to think in ways that wouldn't be possible when just for example sketching. Honestly at this point going into a pathway where working on a body seems very fun, and hopefully I get to experiment with other materials other than cardboard.

5. What can you do in preparation of Day 2?

I honestly did not expect the fast pace of the workshop, and so one thing I could prepare for is to be looser and not spend too much time on a certain idea. This is especially true for when sketching many quick ideas, as I had trouble moving on to another idea because I was so focused on one. In addition, for day two I would like to be more aware of how the accessories forms onto the body, as this would significantly save more time for when I create the final model.
